Brownfields 2008 Goes Carbon Neutral

To counterbalance the enormous amount of energy consumed at a major conference, Brownfields 2008 will purchase carbon offsets – investments in new clean and renewable energy projects.  The offsets will be purchased from NativeEnergy.

Here’s how carbon offsets work. To compensate for emissions from the energy consumed by the Cobo Center and hotel room blocks, and during mobile workshops in metro Detroit, and from disposal of waste from the conference, NativeEnergy invests in new renewable energy programs that will displace fossil-based energy. The specific program funded by Brownfields 2008 is the Hillcrest Saylor Family Farm Methane Project. The methane projects help reduce global warming and pollution by reducing the amount of fossil fuels farms use for heat and cooling, and by preventing emissions from methane gas from waste storage lagoons.

Additionally, Brownfields 2008 and NativeEnergy have teamed up to allow attendees the opportunity to purchase carbon offsets for their travel for worthwhile sustainability projects that will displace electricity from fossil fuels and reduce other greenhouse gas emissions by funding renewable energy projects, promoting energy efficiency, and supporting land use and agriculture-based projects, like methane abatement. By buying the offsets, conference participants can help finance and build these projects, and have their emissions reductions compensate for the CO2 pollution used in traveling to the conference.

To purchase carbon offsets for your travel to and from Brownfields 2008, visit NativeEnergy's Brownfields2008 Website.
